Scott and Veronica

Quite a while ago, I had a friend named Scott Ernest Henderson. I met him at the Strongsville Record Exchange as I was looking for Prince cds. He opened the case for me and spoke of some of Prince's rarities that I figured I was one of the only folks to locally know of. We immediately began a friendship and found our musical tastes were ridiculously similar. Suddenly we were talking about Double Dee & Steinski, Warp Records, Mindless Self Indulgence and My Bloody Valentine. Eventually I also met his longtime girlfriend Veronica and we all became fast friends.

Unfortunately, unbeknowst to me, Scott had some medical issues which caused him to disappear a few times. It turned out he was dealing with these medical issues by using illicit substances which helped him focus his attention but lose control of his life. His girlfriend, Veronica, turned to me as his friend and would call regularly for moral support. I felt terrible for Veronica but really couldn't feel alright telling her everything would be OK when I knew less about what was going on than she did.

In the end, I stopped calling Veronica back. It probably wasn't the most mature thing to do but I knew I couldn't continue to merely tell her what she wanted to hear when I didn't know if it would happen or not. Since then, I haven't heard from either Veronica or Scott and have no idea what has happened to them. I remember being told that Scott might be in jail in West Virginia but I was never able to find any information confirming any of that. All in all, I hope they're doing better and I wish them the best of luck.

By the way, I'm sorry if this didn't really go anywhere, but I just wanted to speak about some friends I've lost.

ATTITUDE!!!

Someone requested this on a message board I frequent so I figured I'd post it here as well. I bought this disc from a little shop called The Bent Crayon in Lakewood, Ohio years ago. It's funny to mention that place as I haven't went back since around 1999 after having a really crappy argument with the owner. He was/is an elitist and, while I'm sure I didn't spend the most money there, I spent enough. I had special ordered the limited vinyl edition of Aphex Twin's Druqks and, as his place was expensive, he informed me I was probably gonna pay around a hundred dollars or so. I was thrilled just to have the vinyl though so I was gonna bite the bullet gladly. One day though, I called him and asked him how much I would have to pay. I had asked him this on multiple occasions and I know I was getting on his nerves but it was really not intentional. He hung up on me FLAT. Well, I called him back and yelled to obscenities into the phone and hung up on him, never to enter the store again. I've wondered over the years about going back, but I don't feel right about it, especially because I'm sure he'd recognize me and call me on it. Now, in my defense, I was young and dumb, but it's still something that my dumb ass will now always have to live with. So, to all the young record collectors out there, if you don't like doing mail order, bear with cruddy record store owners who sell rare things that are hard to come by, as those stores are rare and hard to come by! My father always said not to take shit from anyone if you knew you could get what you were looking for elsewhere. Well, he was right, but I feel like I could have taken a little more shit from that guy at The Bent Crayon

Greetings and Salutations

This isn't my first time starting a blog, but I don't intend for this one to fall apart like my previous ones did. Of course, time will tell on that statement but, for now, I'm just gonna roll with this.

Basically, this is a place for me to talk about movies, music, life, etcetera. I've got pretty varied tastes but you'll never see me talking about Britney Spears like she's the second coming or something equally ridiculous.

Anyway, if you get a chance, go to OrangeCow.org and see my pal Garrett's film works. I don't know if he'll be embaressed by this but you should totally send him a donation and get some of his DVDs. If you want my suggestion, ask for a copy of The Thief and The Cobbler: Recobbled. It's filled with mind blowing hand animated brilliance and the voice of Vincent Price, all edited back together by Garrett alone.

On to music, it's May and the weather is beautiful here in Ohio! I can't wait for summer to be in full kick. I picked out a few tracks which make me think of summer for you all to enjoy.

Pharcyde - 4 Better Of 4 Worse
Girly-Sound (aka Liz Phair) - California
Tim and Eric - Rolo Tony

If you're not familiar with those tracks, well...

The Pharcyde track is from their debut album, Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde, which is a desert island disc if there ever was! It goes without saying that it's one of my all time favorite albums. At this point, the Pharcyde sounded like they were having a lot of fun and the whole album just feels like a perfect summer hour. Their follow-up, Labcabincalifornia, was good but it was their attempt at being more "serious" and therefore a lot less fun. I still suggest people check it out, but get Bizarre Ride first. On a quick note, I remember putting this on a mixtape I gave to a girl I was dating back in the mid-90's. She was totally freaked out by it which, on a basic level, I understood, but I always thought this track was so out there that no one could take it seriously. Well, live and learn. I'm not with hear anyway anymore as she was a total space cadet. Live and learn some more I guess.

Girly-Sound is Liz Phair's early alter-ego from before she got signed to a label. Reportedly, she recorded this track and her other early demos in her dorm at Oberlin College, here in Ohio. I don't care for Oberlin, but I think Liz is great! This song was also featured in Kevin Smith's Chasing Amy. If you're not familiar with Liz, check out Exile In Guyville which is about to reissued soon with a documentary of sorts about it's creation. If you're already familiar but haven't heard the Girly-Sound stuff, go to girlysound.com and get your mind blown by 3 tapes worth of incredible demos!

Tim and Eric are from [adultswim], probably my favorite block of programming ever! They've been around for a while doing a number of things as well as their show Tom Goes To The Mayor which I never liked, but their new show, Tim and Eric Awesome Show Great Job!, is truly a sight to behold! This is from their new CD which compiles most of the music produced for the shows' first two seasons. It's meant to be their attempt at making a new jingle for Rolos candies. The end version of it, which sounds like Michael McDonald, is totally sweet, even if the phrase browntown makes me think of using the toilet. Honestly, I can't get this song out of my head, so I'm passing the insanity on to you! Go find more about Tim and Eric over at adultswim.com and let your brain hurt!

While we're on the topic of [adultswim], while you're at their site watch some clips from Aqua Teen Hunger Force, 12 oz. Mouse, Space Ghost Coast To Coast, Sealab 2021 and some of their other kick-ass shows. You've gotta be ready for some absurdities, but if you're into that sort of thing it's awesome!

One more mention before I go, I'm trying to decide whether I should go see Speed Racer this weekend. That, along with Iron Man, The Dark Knight and Indiana Jones are at the top of my summer movie list. I know there are other films I want to see as well but I can't think of any of them at the moment, apart from Meet Dave which I don't even know when it's supposed to come out. Anyone wish to enlighten me there?

Okay, that's it, I've rambled enough. If you've read my blog, thank you for helping me along me path to total world domination. If you haven't read it, you haven't read this sentence making this portion pretty worthless I guess. Damn.
